“Japanese architectural firm shuhei endo created ‘transtation O’ to rejuvenate
an unmanned station in sakai cho, japan. a former railroad siding the site has

been transformed into a station that includes parking areas for cars and bicycles
and places for waiting passengers. due to the shape of the site, a long corridor was
incorporated into the architecture as an open gallery, making it very accessible.

its continuous form is made with corrugated steel plates. since the area sees some
accumulation of snow in winter, the building structure has to withstand a considerable
amount of snow. for this purpose, plates with thicknesses ranging from 2.7 to 7 mm

were used as needed. corrugated steel plates can be shaped into curved forms easily,
and a variety of section forms are possible. three types of structure were employed
for the building. one is a simple cantilever type with one side of a plate in the ground.
in the second type, a gate-shaped frame is attached to the cantilever type. and, in the third,
both sides of a plate are in contact with the ground. one of the three types were employed
depending on the degree of openness of the area. steel members are galvanized in
consideration of ease of maintenance. recessed-type fixtures are used for floor lights to
create attractive nighttime illumination, featuring reflecting lights.” via

A multi-discipline designer gathering

A multi-discipline designer gathering

It seems that interdisciplinary design gatherings are sprouting up more and more these days. Consortiums like the CCC are growing in popularity and designers are breathing new life into industry and ideas by crossing disciplinary boundaries.  The latest to cross my desktop is Lift in Geneva.

“LIFT is an annual interdisciplinary gathering for creative doers and thinkers in Geneva exploring the social consequences of new technologies over cheese fondue. LIFT09 (February 25-28) will look back to look ahead, exploring topics like change, solidarity, love, or design, during three days of intense networking and inspiration themed around a simple question: “Where did the future go?” frog attended in the past few years, and this year, our Milan-based creative director Fabio Sergio will participate in a panel on “design thinking” (where did the hype go?). Other speakers include Vint Cerf (Google), the “Father of the Internet;” Baba Wamé, a researcher who studied the impact of dating websites on African society; Patrick Gyger, director of the science-fiction museum La Maison d’Ailleurs; Juliana Rotich, author, editor, and digital activist with Global Voices Online and Ushahidi; Carlo Ratti, director of the SENSEable City Laboratory at MIT; Clive van Heerden, creative director at Philips; and James Gillies, CERN spokesperson and historian of the invention of the World Wide Web. Off to the reception now!”

February Takeaway & Napkins

Posted in Battle, Creative Process, Design Events by lefav on February 12, 2009

Last night was the meetup for February at our favourite local pub the Bonn Lair. We had a wonderful turnout with some really cool new people. Being a fixture of this event it’s particularly nice to see so many new people coming and going each month. There are a few staple people that turn up each time, but what’s great about it for me is the random assortment of people that seem to discover us and turn out. This mix of industries, experience and stories is really refreshing and makes you realize how vast and deep the creative class is Sacramento.

Sunny was regailing me with stories about the legacy of ADAC and the great events they use to host around here decades ago. The takeaway for this event seemed to be about untapped opportunity. How so many lonesome objects can coexist so close to each other and never know another. How do we reimagine those things so that each one is born again with new united purpose.

So this month I wanted to introduce a little challenge to get the juices flowing and let everyone have a little fun with that idea. I brought one pack of large white cocktail napkins and a random assortment of pens. I gave each person a single napkin and a pen and they were asked to imagine a new use for the old parking meeting posts that are left around town. Those lonesome soilders of a bygone technology, needed a new life and here’s a few snapshots of those ideas.
