Battle for the Capital on MARRS!
The CCC will be hosting Sacramento’s first ever Battle for the Capital next Saturday at the MARRS building in midtown. Local designers, artists and architects will be competing in a live design challenge to create new rapid design solutions to some common problems in the city of Sacramento. If you’re a designer or creative and you’re interested in competing or being involved email me for more information.
Come out next week from 6-10pm and witness the creative process first hand. Watch these young talents create new concepts right in front of you. See the design process in action and participate in some of Sacramento’s future concepts.
Sculptural bird houses
From Joe Papendick:
“The pieces are usually built from the base up and designed as they are being built. Gravity and balance play a crucial role. Most of the pieces employ a combination of several different metals; Mild Steel, Stainless Steel and Copper are most prevalent. In some cases Bronze or Brass can also be found.”
Tikkun Olam, Baby!
I’m not one to tout religion. I just watched Bill Maher’s documentary and thought he was as ridiculous as the stuff he was highlighting, but I believe that religion can be used for the powers of good. My favorite new example is the Jewish Reconstructionist Congregation in Evanston, Illinois by Ross Barney. This is what happens when good design and good religion meet. This synagogue has LEED Platinum certification and the honor of being one of this year’s AIA COTE top ten. A house of worship is often the centerpiece of a community, so the symbolism of this building type being well designed gets extra brownie points.
Tikkun Olam is everyone’s favorite Jewish buzzword, which means “repairing the earth”. The building committee kept this concept in mind in design and construction. The result is as ethical as it is intriguing. The site is enhanced with native flowers, gabion walls and reclaimed wood wall cladding, ignore the imported Jerusalem stone (it’s a Jewish thing). Inside is full of natural light and air. The biophilictreatments continue on the interior with reclaimed cypress cladding, wind-felled walnut and site harvested maple millwork, sunflower hull cabinetry and polished concrete floors with exposed aggregate. The sanctuary’s ‘eternal light’ is solar powered, as it should be.
Designer Pint Night Tomorrow
Admittedly, I haven’t posted much recently, I’ve been very busy on several fronts including new client work, design events and a new semi-secret studio project soon to be unveiled. But I always seem to have time to promote the pint nights. Maybe it’s my love of good beer or just a innate need to socialize with other creatives. It comes but once a month and I want everyone to know. So with out regret..I plead you to come out and enjoy a pint with us.
April’s Designer Pint Night
Just a little reminder for those diehard followers out there, that next week is our designer pint night for the month of April. Come out next Tuesday to de Veres and join us for few drinks, some heated sketching battles and a bit of conversation. Big shout out to Will Rodriguez of Uneek1 for this months flier.
