Kris Barkley, an AIACV Board Member and Vice-Pres. of Dreyfuss & Blackford, Saxon Sigerson and Arturo Levenfeld are hosting a Forum: Architecture Matters.  They are presenting submissions (including their own) from the recent AIA Committee on Design (COD) IDEAS Competition.  They’ve asked several Architects and Designers, including Dustin Littrell, to choose a project from those submitted and briefly present the concept.  It’s more of a dialogue than a presentation format.

It’s being held at the AIACV office from 5:30-8:00 pm on August 11th.  $10 cover but beer and pizza will be provided.

The submissions can be found under the “past winners” link (2009 competition) in this website http://www.aia.org/practicing/groups/kc/AIAS075321. You can also see what the parameters were for the competition.

Is your kid an Artbeast?

Welcome to artBEAST Studio! — ArtBeast Studio

Midtown Sacramento just got a great new addition to the youth art scene… Artbeast.  Artbeast is according to it’s website, “…a drop in arts exploration space for children featuring an open studio, arts classes, and arts exploration rooms. Though all children are welcome to visit ArtBeast, special focus is given to creating an environment for children under 6.

The open studio features tables, easels, and clay mounds where young artists can work. Surrounding shelves are stocked with paint, papers, objects from nature, recycled tidbits, glues, crayons, glitter, scissors, an array of brushes, and an even wider offering of objects from which to make art. Children develop confidence in expressing and messing as they create art pieces that convey their sense of the world.

Arts exploration rooms include rooms to explore dramatic arts, music, and movement. Dramatic play spaces changes monthly so children can explore the creation of story lines with ever changing scenery, props, costumes, and puppets. A music exploration space offers instruments from around the world so that budding musicians can strum, form drum circles, or form a band for the afternoon.”

In my opinion it’s a brilliant mashup of urban playspace, art center and family oriented creative space. It’s these kinds of businesses that really get me excited about the shift in community consciousness around the arts, especially as it pertains to our children. Kids by nature are so tactile and innocent in their exploration of space and materials and they need this type of ’sandbox’ expression, which is not always available in typical ‘arts’ environments. Artbeast is a great addition to our inner core and youth arts culture.

Welcome, dear friends and young creatives.

I’m particularly excited about this event, in the hopes that we can kickstart some great ideas and new concepts for the downtown corridor. There has been a lot of talk on the street about design events and how the  creative class can reshape the cultural landscape of our city.

Godin on Busking.

Posted in Uncategorized by lefav on July 13, 2009

Thinking a lot about innovation and cities, I came across this post by Seth Godin. I think he makes a great point about venues and service. Go on, do the impossible.

“I have no patience for bureaucracies that proclaim that they are unable to innovate. It’s not that they are unable to do so, it’s that they don’t want to do so.

The other day as I walked through SFO, I heard live music. Live! Looking over, there was Bart Davenport and his band, playing real good for free. Probably not for free, actually, but collecting plenty of tips in the box out front. They sold a lot of CDs too.

What a great venue. What a service (for Bart, for me, for the airport).

Go ahead, do something impossible.”

What possibilities

I had a great conversation today with a couple of people about ‘ideas’. What are they, where do they come from and where are they taking us as a culture. We came ups with so many just in our short conversation, we decided we need a giant pool just to hold them. Thankfully Sacramento is somewhat of an empty vessel ready to be filled with brilliant concepts.

So what are your ideas (if you care to share)? Where do you see them going and what roll do others play in them?

cool new website — how do they do that?

http://www.shdl.jp/main.html

The website is for the Japanese architecture firm called Small House Design Lab.  I have seen other websites with this layout before in Flash, but this seems like some new javascript or something.

If you know how this was constructed, I am all ears.
