joshua prince-ramus (REX architecture) interview

joshua prince-ramus interview with designboom.com

an excerpt from the interview:

what advice would you give to the young?
yes. I have one specific piece of advice, which is actually :
don’t follow conventional paths.
this is the best moment you could ever be a young architect,
because the playing field is even. for a long time, the older
generations have eaten the young. they’re going down right
now and there’s no definition of what architecture will be.
don’t try to get a junior job at the best firm you can and spend
the next 30 years trying to work your way through.
this is the moment to move home, use all your contacts and
start operating locally and do great work locally and define
what architecture will be for the next 50 years.
the more general advice is that no one can teach you design.
no one’s going to teach you in architecture school to be good.
they might teach you to be self-critical, but you’re either going
to be self-critical or you’re not. in school you should focus on
learning contracts (laughs) and spend most of your time
- if you’re in architecture school – over at the law school or the
business school because that’s where you’re going to learn
the tools. the real things you can learn in architecture school
are tools. focus on tools not on your studio course.”

a laptop worth going back to Windows for

Wow, I am thoroughly impressed with the new Adamo line of Dell’s.  Take a look at some of the detail shots under the “Admire” tab.  If you look at the specifications, the laptop lacks a bit performance wise, like the MacBook Air, but if they could create a more developed line, I would become a convert.

Designer Pint Night & events.

Posted in Uncategorized by lefav on July 16, 2009

A quick reminder that pint night is tonight. Come have a cold pint with us and discuss the future of design in the Sacramento region, and see what others are doing. There will be beer, food, drawing on napkins, general excitement and overly enthusiastic artsy types. Get down with us.

Thursday, July 16th

Designer pint night
Tonight @ de Veres

Also, this Saturday, Sac News & Review will be hosting the first ever Design Downtown event on K street. Local artists and creatives will be lined up to show off there goods. Come down town this weekend to see what all the buzz is about. I’m particularly excited about this event, in the hopes that we can kickstart some great ideas and new concepts for the downtown corridor. There has been a lot of talk on the street about design events and how the  creative class can reshape the cultural landscape of our city.

Godin on Busking.

Thinking a lot about innovation and cities, I came across this post by Seth Godin. I think he makes a great point about venues and service. Go on, do the impossible.

“I have no patience for bureaucracies that proclaim that they are unable to innovate. It’s not that they are unable to do so, it’s that they don’t want to do so.

The other day as I walked through SFO, I heard live music. Live! Looking over, there was Bart Davenport and his band, playing real good for free. Probably not for free, actually, but collecting plenty of tips in the box out front. They sold a lot of CDs too.

What a great venue. What a service (for Bart, for me, for the airport).

Go ahead, do something impossible.”

What possibilities

I had a great conversation today with a couple of people about ‘ideas’. What are they, where do they come from and where are they taking us as a culture. We came ups with so many just in our short conversation, we decided we need a giant pool just to hold them. Thankfully Sacramento is somewhat of an empty vessel ready to be filled with brilliant concepts.

So what are your ideas (if you care to share)? Where do you see them going and what roll do others play in them?

Well, it appears we’re doing big things and making waves in the capital city. The Sacramento Press featured us on their homepage the other day and we’ve been generating a lot of interest and support. Check it out here.

On a side note, I wanted to apologize for not feeding your design addiction more often. I recently opened a new studio downtown called ROMP Creative and we’ve been busy making the transition. I’ll try to post up more images from out pints nights and other stimulating news.
